Long Beach IndyCar round moves from April to 2021 finale, due to COVID-19

Share this article on Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Email IndyCar's 2021 Long Beach round has been moved to become the category's season finale due to the COVID-19 pandemic, officials from IndyCar have announced. The move from the event's traditional April date creates a three-race west coast swing to conclude the IndyCar season, beginning at Portland International on 12 September, followed by Laguna Seca the next weekend, and concluding on the streets of Long Beach on 26 September. The Long Beach event was originally due to be the third round on the 2021 schedule, and was planned for 18 April. "It is important to have Long Beach rescheduled to continue the history and tradition for one of the series' hallmark events in one of the nation's premier media markets," Penske Entertainment Corp. president and CEO Mark Miles said. AJ Foyt Racing signs Dalton Kellett to second IndyCar seat

Foyt Racing next season, after completing a partial campaign with the team in 2020. The 27-year-old Indy Lights graduate made eight appearances in Foyt's #14 entry, which he shared with Sebastien Bourdais and Tony Kanaan. Kellett scored six podium finishes in his four years of Indy Lights but suffered with testing being non-existent during the COVID-impacted season, which restricted his on-track time to race weekends. The Canadian was never able to finish higher than 20th as he grappled with an unfamiliar car. He also entered the Indianapolis 500 in a third Foyt entry, but crashed out on lap 82 and was classified 31st. He will partner Bourdais full-time next season, replacing Charlie Kimball in the #4 machine.
