Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman announces Jeff Blashill will remain head coach

Yzerman continues to stick by Blashill despite this year's struggles

Jeff Blashill will remain the head coach of the Detroit Red Wings for the 2020-21 season, despite the team finishing this season with the NHL's worst record. Team general manager Steve Yzerman announced that he has no current plans to make a switch at the position while addressing the media via Zoom on Wednesday.

Yzerman said (via Detroit Free Press):

"My remarks and thoughts on the head coach, Jeff Blashill, haven't changed from February. I have no plans on making a coaching change at this time."

Yzerman comments came shortly after NHL commissioner Gary Bettman announced the remaining games of the 2019-20 regular season will not be played and the league will go into a new playoff format.

Blashill, who has a 153-194-52 record in 399 games with the Wings, will get another shot despite a seriously disappointing season this year.

Before the season paused due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Red Wings were sitting with a 17-49-5 record with 39 points, by far the worst in the league. The Ottawa Senators finished with the second-lowest point total with 62.

When Blashill was promoted and named head coach back in 2015, he lead the team to a record of 41-30-11, 93 points and a playoff berth. That year they ended in third place in the Atlantic Division and were taken out by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round.

They made the playoffs again in 2016, but have since gone four straight years without qualifying.

Yzerman has supported Blashill and been able to look past the record and to the development of their young players. Injuries plagued the team and Yzerman felt there were more important things to focus on than wins and losses.
