Running through all 16 games on the Detroit Lions schedule

The 2019 campaign was one to forget for the Detroit Lions. They finished in last place in the NFC North with a 3-12-1 record, firmly placing head coach Matt Patricia and GM Bob Quinn on the hot seat entering 2020. Franchise quarterback Matthew Stafford also went down with a season-ending back injury for the second straight year.

As we look toward the 2020 campaign, the mission is pretty straight forward: win and keep your jobs. Lose? Well, you'll likely be packing up your things in a cardboard box. According to the latest odds from William Hill Sports Book, the Lions have an over/under win total of 6.5, and below you'll see if they get over that mark in our way-too-early, week-by-week prediction of the 2020 season. Along with seeing our prediction for each game, you'll get odds for each team and the early lines for Week 1 and Week 2.

All odds are provided by William Hill.

Week 1 vs. Bears

Line: Lions -1.5
Opponent win total:
O/U 8

Prediction: Chicago will still be working through its quarterback battle entering the opener and the Lions will be able to catch them in a bit of disarray. A healthy Matthew Stafford should be able to handle this Bears defense enough to start off the 2020 season on a high note. Lions win 17-10.

Projected record: 1-0

Week 2 at Packers

Line: Packers -6.5
Opponent win total:
O/U 9

Prediction: Aaron Rodgers is going to enter the 2020 regular season with a rather large chip on his shoulder after the Packers drafted his heir apparent in first-round pick Jordan Love. With that in mind, Detroit will likely feel that wrath from Rodgers at Lambeau Field and will make for a rather long day in Green Bay. Packers win 33-13.

Projected record: 1-1

Week 3 at Cardinals

Opponent win total: O/U 7

Prediction: Arizona is the sexy pick to take a major leap in 2020 and I'm firmly in that camp. Second-year quarterback Kyler Murray has a superstar weapon in DeAndre Hopkins and won't be afraid to let loose with his new toy in this home contest against Detroit. Stafford will be able to find some solid opportunities against this Cardinals defense, but it won't be enough to outduel Murray here. Cardinals win 27-24.

Projected record: 1-2

Week 4 vs. Saints

Opponent win total: O/U 10.5

Prediction: New Orleans is going to be riding off emotion all year as it's likely Drew Brees' final year in the league, which gives the entire season a "Last Dance" feel. Brees is still an elite quarterback and has tremendous weapons around him in Alvin Kamara, Michael Thomas and free agent-signee Emmanuel Sanders. Detroit is simply going to be outgunned. It's also at this point where the alarm bells start ringing for head coach Matt Patricia's job security. Saints win 28-17.

Projected record: 1-3

Week 6 at Jaguars

Opponent win total: O/U 4.5

Prediction: After three straight losses following the opener, Detroit catches a break in the schedule here as they'll head down the Jacksonville to take on the Jaguars. This club is still being stripped for parts and Matthew Stafford should make easy work of this team coming out of the bye. This will also be a strong showing for Patricia's defense as they'll be able to snag a couple of picks off second-year quarterback Gardner Minshew. Lions win 20-9.

Projected record: 2-3

Week 7 at Falcons

Opponent win total: O/U 7.5

Prediction: What's this? A winning streak? Matthew Stafford rolls into Atlanta and comes out the victor after going toe-to-toe with Matt Ryan in what is a great display of offense. Detroit's secondary has trouble with Julio Jones all afternoon, but the Falcons have even more difficulty slowing down Kenny Golladay. Lions win 27-20.

Projected record: 3-3

Week 8 vs. Colts

Opponent win total: O/U 9

Prediction: Indy got an upgrade at the quarterback position this offseason after inking veteran Philip Rivers to a deal. They'll be in the thick of the AFC South hunt, so Detroit will be seeing an extremely motivated team heading into Ford Field. Rivers has himself a day, finding T.Y. Hilton for a number of chunk plays down the field, which sets up a couple of scoring opportunities for Marlon Mack. Colts win 27-13.

Projected record: 3-4

Week 9 at Vikings

Opponent win total: O/U 9

Prediction: Minnesota sends a statement to Detroit and the rest of the NFC North that this is their division to lose, winning a rock fight against the Lions. This is going to be a defensive battle and both clubs will work the ground game offensively. The Vikings don't ask too much of Kirk Cousins and simply give the ball to Dalvin Cook, who is able to help Minnesota control the clock and find the end zone. Vikings win 13-9.

Projected record: 3-5

Week 10 vs. Redskins

Opponent win total: O/U 5.5

Prediction: Even if Washington surprises folks and has a bounce-back season in 2020 with quarterback Dwayne Haskins taking a step up in Year 2, Detroit is still the better football team and they'll show it here. Stafford will be under duress by the Redskins pass rush but will be able to withstand it to get Detroit an early lead and keep adding to it. Lions win 30-20.

Projected record: 4-5

Week 11 at Panthers

Opponent win total: O/U 5.5

Prediction: Matt Patricia's defense deserves the credit in this game. They do a strong job neutralizing Christian McCaffrey's impact out of the backfield, which renders Carolina's offense stagnant. Trey Flowers has as strong game along the defensive line and rookie corner Jeff Okudah even gets in on the action with an interception. Lions win 17-10.

Projected record: 5-5

Week 12 vs. Texans

Opponent win total: O/U 8

Prediction: On a short week and playing in their annual Thanksgiving Day game, the Lions struggle against Deshaun Watson, who shows out on a national stage. He slices up the Detroit secondary and specifically torches rookie corner Jeff Okudah, giving him his "Welcome to the NFL" moment. Texans win 27-10.

Projected record: 5-6

Week 13 at Bears

Opponent win total: O/U 8

Prediction: After falling to Detroit in the opener, the Bears get revenge on the Lions when they walk into their building. Nick Foles has firmly entrenched himself as Chicago's starting quarterback by this point and has built up enough chemistry with his pass-catchers. He is able to gash this secondary, which has been on a bit of a skid over the previous few weeks. Bears win 21-13.

Projected record: 5-7

Week 14 vs. Packers

Opponent win total: O/U 9

Prediction: Green Bay is still in the thick of the NFC North race with the Minnesota Vikings and needs this game to keep pace. Rodgers isn't as hot as he was earlier in the year at Lambeau, but the ground game for the Packers, highlighted by Aaron Jones, will give this unit headaches all game. Packers win 23-17.

Projected record: 5-8

Week 15 at Titans

Opponent win total: O/U 8.5

Prediction: Similar to the week prior against Green Bay, Detroit is going to struggle against the run as Derrick Henry will look similar to how he did at this time a year ago, bowling over opponents as he carries Tennessee to victory. The offense will perform fine, but will simply not have enough time to try and dig themselves out of the hole as Henry's dominance on the ground will control the clock in the Titans' favor. Titans win 17-10.

Projected record: 5-9

Week 16 vs. Buccaneers

Opponent win total: O/U 9.5

Prediction: Matt Patricia gets to see his old quarterback Tom Brady from their days in New England together. While it's likely pretty chummy between the two prior to the game, Brady and his new Bucs offense lights Patricia's secondary up as they are still fighting for the NFC South title with the New Orleans Saints. Brady finds the end zone three times (all in the first half), leaving Detroit hopeless from the jump. Buccaneers win 33-13.

Projected record: 5-10

Week 17 vs. Vikings

Opponent win total: O/U 9

Prediction: Minnesota has its spot in the playoffs all locked up by this point and decides to keep a large chunk of stars on the bench. That makes this game a rather easy one for the Lions to pull out, giving Matt Patricia a win as he enters a rather uncertain offseason in terms of his job status. Lions win 21-10.

Projected record: 6-10
