NHL odds 2020: Stanley Cup predictions, title picks, best teams to avoid from proven handicapper
The NHL has been on pause since March 12 due to the coronavirus pandemic, but the league is preparing to get back on the ice, as commissioner Gary Bettman announced a Return to Play plan on Tuesday. The remainder of the 2019-20 regular season has been declared officially over, and the league's top 12 teams in each conference, based on points percentage, will compete for the Stanley Cup.
In each conference, the top four teams will compete in a round-robin tournament to determine seeding, while the remaining eight will participate in a best-of-five qualifying round. The Boston Bruins and Vegas Golden Knights are co-favorites at 11-2 in the latest 2020 Stanley Cup odds from William Hill. The Tampa Bay Lightning are listed at 6-1 NHL odds to win it all, while the Washington Capitals and reigning Stanley Cup-champion St. Louis Blues are 8-1. Before making any 2020 Stanley Cup picks, be sure to check out the latest NHL predictions from SportsLine veteran handicapper Bill Marzano.

Top 2020 NHL predictions
Marzano is fading the Capitals, even though they're one of the top favorites at 8-1 in the latest 2020 Stanley Cup odds. Washington ranks third in the Eastern Conference with a .652 points percentage and will receive a qualifying-round bye, competing in a round-robin tournament to determine the top four seeds in the conference.
The Capitals were struggling before the regular season was paused, going 6-8-3 over their final 17 games. That slump left them just one point in front of the Philadelphia Flyers in the Metropolitan Division.
While it was second in the NHL in goals (240) and captain Alex Ovechkin was tied for the league lead with 48 tallies, Washington had difficulty keeping the puck out of the net, ranking eighth in the conference in goals allowed. Netminder Braden Holtby was part of the problem, as his 3.11 goals-against average and .897 save percentage were the worst of his career.
How to make 2020 Stanley Cup picks
Marzano is eyeing an under-the-radar team that has struggled mightily in the postseason over the past decade. This massive long shot has improved since making key changes, Marzano says, and anyone who backs this underdog could hit it big. He's only sharing who it is here.
